Meet Remi the rat! For our first dissection on something other than a banana, we had to dissect a rat.
External
Here you can clearly see Remi's nose, known as the nares. You can also the Vibrissa, which are the whiskers. Also, you can locate the masseter, which is the mouth.
Here we have the Mammary Papilla, which classifies Remi as a female. Right above the tail, you can see the anus.
Muscular System
We used a blunt probe to find the pectoralis major, which is being displayed in this picture.
Located on the outside of Remi's legs, we have the biceps femoris, shown where the incision was made.
Proximal to the paw, we have the triceps brachii.
To the left of the triceps is the latissimus dorsi.
Respiratory System
The blunt probe is pointing to the trachea, which allows air to pass through the neck and into the thorax.
The blunt probe is pointing to the lungs.
The thin sheet of muscle superior to the liver is the diaphragm. It separates the respiratory system from the digestive system.
Circulatory System
Here we are pointing at Remi's heart.
Directly inferior to the heart is the vena cava. Its main purpose is to help carry blood.
This large blue vein that is connecting to the kidneys is the renal vein. Its main purpose is to drain deoxygenated blood from the kidneys.
Superior to the heart is the aorta, the largest artery in the body. Spouting off of the aorta is the carotid artery.
